For Inlays & Onlays we are pleased to use the cutting-edge Emax ® system.
What are Inlay and Onlay restorations?
These restoration types are used to repair decayed or damaged teeth. We recommend these treatments for teeth that require more support than a regular filling provides.
What is the difference between the two?
It is recommended that inlays replace the biting inside portion of a tooth if the healthy structure remains on the tooth’s biting outside portion. Onlays are used to replace broken cusps or add strength around the tooth’s perimeter to compromised areas.
Why can I just get a filling?
The remaining healthy tooth structure can be weakened by a large dental filling, causing the tooth to break, crack or eventually require root canal therapy. Your bite’s forces can perpetuate this damage because over time a filling simply can not withstand these forces.
What is the advantage of Inlays/Onlays over Crowns?
Inlays and onlays provide a conservative preparation that preserves as much of the healthy tooth as possible. We use tooth-coloured resin fillings that don’t discolour over time. Prefabricated inlays of composite, porcelain or gold have a precise fit, making it easier to clean your tooth. An onlay also protects the tooth’s weak areas.
How long will they last?
While your dentist will always provide you with long-lasting restorative procedures, virtually no procedure in dentistry can really be considered “permanent.” Inlays and onlays will last on average between five and fifteen years, but this depends mostly on how much stress they endure and how you look after your oral hygiene. Emax ® inlays and onlays can last a lifetime with proper care.
